Meet Us

“Think of all the beauty still left around you, and be happy.”
- Anne Frank

Welcome to Left of The Middle Photography!
Hi, I’m Melissa—and I’m so glad you’re here.

I’ve been photographing weddings and families professionally since 2013, and I still feel incredibly lucky to call this my job. What started as a creative spark has grown into a full-time passion (and a few lovely awards along the way, too—which is such a nice bonus for doing something I love).

These days, Left of The Middle Photography is mostly a one-woman show, though I bring in a trusted second photographer when needed—especially for weddings with lots of moving parts and beautiful moments to capture.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of documenting hundreds of love stories, family milestones, and honest, joy-filled memories across Lake Macquarie, Newcastle, the Central Coast, the Hunter Valley, and Port Stephens. From barefoot beach weddings to backyard birthday parties, relaxed family sessions at home to big, boisterous reunions—each session is tailored to reflect your people, your moments, and your story.

So, what’s with the name Left of The Middle?

Well… I’m proudly left-handed (one of the lucky 10%!) which meant growing up with smudged notebooks, awkward scissors, and a lifelong appreciation for doing things a little differently. In photography, “left of the middle” is also a creative choice—placing the subject off-centre to tell a more natural, authentic story. It’s a small detail, but one that speaks volumes.

What you can expect from working with me

My sessions are relaxed, low-pressure, and full of natural interactions—no stiff poses, just plenty of laughter, connection, movement, and those little unscripted moments that make you you. I’ll gently guide you along the way, help you feel at ease in front of the camera, and make sure we have fun while doing it.

And you won’t be left waiting long—I’m known for fast turnarounds, so you’ll be reliving the magic in no time.

A few fun facts about me

    • I love sunshine, fresh flowers, and I’m a total nature junkie.

    • I’ll absolutely cry happy tears during your wedding vows.

    • I believe your session should feel like hanging out with a friend (who happens to take amazing photos).

    • I swim most days (even when it’s cold—it’s addictive!).

    • I can’t start a shoot without checking (twice) that my batteries are charged and cards are in the camera—photographer paranoia is real!

    • I love a good bushwalk, especially if there’s a lookout or waterfall at the end.

    • I secretly love overcast days—perfect light, less squinting, more magic.

    • I’ll always pick salty over sweet—hot chips > cake, any day.

Why I do this

Because time moves fast—and beautiful photos help us hold on to what matters most. I’m here to capture the big moments, the small glances, and everything in between. I want you to walk away with images that feel like you—natural, joyful, and real.

So whether you’re planning your wedding, wrangling the kids for updated family photos, or celebrating a special milestone, I’d love to help you freeze this season in time.

Let’s tell your story together.
